When the alternative meant nuking potentially hundreds of thousands of noncombatants to death? How is that even a question? America had already firebombed Tokyo that March in a deliberate targeting of civilians; they used incendiary bombs because of the type of houses the people lived in. It killed 100,000 civilians, created a firestorm that sucked the oxygen out of the air, and left a million homeless. They were beaten. They didn’t want anymore. Yes, clearly leaving them broken and beaten with their shitty little emperor guy was much better than nuking hundreds of thousands of civilians and unleashing the nuclear horror upon our species, or some other act of war that could have cost far more lives. Clearly.
